Arkeology-contest

OK, an important announcement for the competition: if you have already submitted your list, and you feel like “heck, I should have put in that piece instead”, just write a new one, and that’s the one that counts! This is all a fun and friendly thing, so we are relaxed here…
I can also tell you that we are cooking on some surprise for all of you who have guessed…Dadadadaaaa…I won’t say no more…

Please read Jonas’ comment: if you have given your list without Calleth…just put in a new one!

Ok, so here is the competition! Guess which eight Ark-songs will be part of Jonas’ i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e piece “An Arkeology”. One is in the trailer, so that one is for free…put your list in a comment here and you’re in!

A little tip from Jonas…don’t think necessarily that it will be always the biggest hits that will be best in an orchestral version…not that there are no hits ;) but not only…The price for the hero who will get closest in guessing: a special copy of the orchestral score with autographs, including Ola of course, but also the orchestra.

This is what we call a “World Premiere”…imagine having a copy of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with Ludwig’s autograph and everyone who played it the first time…get the idea?

OK, let the contest begin… (for those of you who already put your list in the main forum, don’t worry, you’re already in!)

Marianne (and everyone else)! Of course it would be interesting to write more music based on The Arks songs. BUT, at the same time I know that far from all songs are realistic to use in a completely new musical enviroment, such as a classical piece for piano and strings (like An Arkeology).

When I wrote the piece, the very first thing I did was to listen through all records, all songs. As soon as I found something that in my classicaly trained ears was insteresting to use, I wrote it down. At this point I was down to maybe 30% or so. Then I started to write, and of course more songs were excluded. And finally, eight songs included in one piece. In this piece I had to exclude songs that are FANTASTIC, but didn’t make it because of length of my piece, musical style etc etc. But who knows..? Maybe we should start planning for TENGSTRAND-2010? ;-)

Hmm, this means that Ola has very little to do with this Arkeology? I thought he picked the songs and then I picked, or at least tried, my eight songs - though the list is not official yet - from Ola’s point of view. But Jonas, you picked the songs all by yourself? This is actually quite interesting to know. This changes my perspective. Maybe needless to say, but I am very eager to win this competition.

Jonas - wanna grab a beer sometime before the 20th? ;)

  36. Comment by pertengstrand on April 6, 2008 10:14 am

    Ehum…no bribes, eh? ;)

  37. Comment by Emma K on April 6, 2008 10:37 am

No no, that was not a bribe! Of course Jonas has to pay for his own beers ;)

  38. Comment by Christina on April 6, 2008 3:12 pm

Um, Jonas, I got this itchy feeling that “Girl You Gonna Get’em” did not make it all the way. :D

It has not got many votes so far either, so to speak. Personally I also decided that “This Piece of Poetry” would be most exciting in a fast string quartet arrangement, but … I will see the 26th.

  39. Comment by Marianne on April 6, 2008 4:07 pm

    Thanks Jonas,
it´s interesting to hear how you make the choice! I did it myself in the same way. Strings and piano in my head all day long.
Can´t you after the 26th tell us more about your choices and thoughts? Which songs were very close to attend and so…

  40. Comment by Jonas on April 7, 2008 7:19 am

Ola has actually very little with AN ARKEOLOGY to do, and at the same time he has everything with AN ARKEOLOGY to do. 1) He writes almost all material for the Ark, so every theme in my piece has the very strongest connection with Ola. 2) I’ve been very much involved in Olas 2 latest orchestral projects LEMA SABACHTANI and LINNAEUS REX (where we meet Per, thank god for that!). So, I know Olas thoughts about classical music. And of course, I think it’s a fun idea to work on this piece without knowing EVERYTHING about every song. I look at every song in a new way, which you all hopefully will hear in Växjö.

Calleth in the trailer is a good example. Olas version is big and bombastic (who hasn’t joined in singing the CYCI-theme over and over again at their live concerts?), and in AN ARKEOLOGY it’s the complete opposite. Olas music together with a new thought. AND, on top af all this, I knew that one of of our most interesting and openminded musicians today (Per, of course) would play the solo part. Halleluja!

But fact remains: It would be 100% impossible in the first place if Ola wasn’t one of Sweden’s (Europe’s?) most interesting songwriters. Don’t call me if you want a Vikingarnaology…

Finally, just as much inspiration as writing for Per and the Trondheim Soloists is, just as much inspiration comes from knowing that interested and enthusiastic fans will listen (and not just my mom). DON’T FORGET TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CONTEST! It’s so much fun to read about your gessings and thoughts!!

  41. Comment by Jonas on April 7, 2008 8:15 am

But Emma, I would never answer questions that would help you with your list! No, no, no, not very nice towards the other participants… :-)

  42. Comment by Emma K on April 7, 2008 10:34 am

Still, just saying loud and open if you listened to the singles or not is not very helpful. Just a little helpful. :)

  43. Comment by Christina on April 7, 2008 10:46 am

Ola is certainly a remarkably comprehensive songwriter. The songs have very clever lyrics and they rock, of course they do. But if you strip off the lyrics and the rock riffs, you will still find beautiful melodies, as Ola’s songs are more melody oriented than “riff oriented” or “sound oriented” or “repeating my own biggest hit-oriented” …
In this case I see a strong resemblence with the skills of Lennon/McCartney, actually. (Besides, The Ark are a much better live band than The Beatles ever where, but OK, times and circumstances are very different.)
So, I have longed for orchestra versions of Ark songs for a long time, especially since I heard Linnaeus Rex and realized that it sounded very much Ola Salo even though the “costume” was so different. The best thing with this little contest is that I will be happy to hear the result, NO MATTER what songs you have actually picked. But I think you got many of us thinking hard now, really trying to discover how to re-arrange the songs. I can imagine “Poetry” as a string quartet, as well as “Patchouli” with a boggie-woggie riff, or “Virgin” as a quiet song for treble recorder. We have already heard the happy glam rock song “The Worrying Kind” in the enchanting version of Maia Hirasawa … there is so much to do with Ola’s songs, so many possibilities as the basic material is so solid and good.

So, even though we will appreciate the Arkelogy 100%, Jonas, you have to be prepared to discuss other suggestions later …

  44. Comment by Emma K on April 7, 2008 11:14 am

Yes, Christina. I agree with you. I never thought a slow piano version of TWK was possible, but it was very possible indeed. And very beautiful as well. Now I can’t wait to hear Absolutely No Decorum as an orchestral piece. I can’t even imagine what it will be like. I will feel like a kid in a candy store on the 26th.

I’m a huge fan of Beatles as well. Maybe that’s what Ola has in common with Lennon/McCartney - when you strip the songs down to the very core there is something remarkably left.

  46. Comment by Christina on April 7, 2008 1:32 pm

Oh yes, I can imagine AND. The angel choir intro with a very slow, sad cello or maybe the viola. And then the piano (or maybe the flute?) picking up the lead voice. Slow, very soft. I can imagine that, really.

Well, maybe Jonas has thouht something completely else out, something much more pompous. A furious piano accelerando for the chorus, maybe? I have always adored the fast shifts between high and low tunes in AND, they create a very interesting tension in that piece.

Jesus. If you hear something saying “poff!” in the middle of the concert, it’s just me bursting with anticipation.

  47. Comment by Jonas on April 7, 2008 10:12 pm

Of course, Christina! Today I went to my working studio in Malmö and rescued my notes from when i wrote the ARKEOLOGY (they were about to be thrown away), only to be able to talk about more possible choices of Ark songs, and why I did, and why I didn’t and so on… So don’t hesitate to ask afterwards!

Both Per and I realize that many of you here are coming to Växjö to listen to Ola, the new song, and Per playing AN ARKEOLOGY for the first time ever (!). BUT, don’t forget all the other music that some of scandinavias best classical musicians will perform! Some of you are talking about Olas qualitys in writing strong melodies, just as Lennon/McCartney. Let me add: Just as Grieg! The orchestra will perform one of my favourite pieces for strings, the Holberg Suite. Every movement is nothing less than fantastic! It’s a warm recommendation to listen to it before the concert, if you have the time. It’s often found at public libraries, so you don’t have to buy it… :-) OR, you can go to the orchestras homepage where you can listen to at least 2 movements.

http://www.trondheimsolistene.no, choose Edvard Grieg in the Music Player. ENJOY!

  48. Comment by Marianne on April 8, 2008 8:53 am

Here we have the most inspiring and thrilling music contest I ever have taken part in. Honestly, I don´t like competitions very much. But this one is quite unique!
And Jonas o Per, I am sure you will surprise us but how? That´s another contest!
    Can´t wait!
This is my new and final(?) list

    Absolutly no dekorum
    A virgin like you
    Disease
    Little disfunk you
    No end
    Joy surrender
The most radical thing to do
    Calleth you, cometh I

    Thanks Jonas for recalling Grieg!
The music of Per Gynt was my way into classical music.

I also look forward to listen to the symphony of Karl McFaul.
    His titles are very interesting!

  49. Comment by Christina on April 8, 2008 10:29 am

Don’t worry, Jonas, I have certainly NOT forgotten the rest of the concert program. I have to admit that the Holberg suite is not one of my favourite Grieg works  but that does not mean I think it is bad …
I am not familiar with the Liszt piece either, where is it from? But I trust ol’ Liszt - after all, he wrote Libestraum, one of the most beautiful piano pieces ever made. So how bad can it be?
And I still wonder why you included “Winter” and not “Spring” as the concert is held at the end of April.

  50. Comment by Marianne on April 8, 2008 3:39 pm

I have just noticed that if you want to be prepared for Karl McFauls music you can visit Pers My Space place and liste to a bit from his new symphony ” Nordic Chill!”

  51. Comment by Jonas on April 8, 2008 9:58 pm

Since I’m not conducting the Liszt piece, I actually know very little about it. Hmm, anyone knows? I listened through it just now, and it’s a very fine work!

  52. Comment by pertengstrand on April 8, 2008 11:08 pm

Liszt is a CRAZY piece…all recordings out there (including my own) is pretty boring compared to what you will hear on the 26th…we just performed it in France in March.

You will see why Winter is the perfect piece, I can’t say anymore, but you will see…

Yes, the Nordic Chill is actually the second movenent of the Piano Concerto! Initially, my thought was to play only that, then all of a sudden at a meeting Karl told me he wanted to finish that concerto with the final, third movement! It took ten years, but the happier we are that it’s finished!

  53. Comment by Sandra on April 9, 2008 8:10 pm

    My comment for the competition…

  54. Comment by Laura on April 9, 2008 11:21 pm

    This is mine:

    - Calleth You Cometh I
    - The Most Radical Thing To Do
    - Tell Me This Night Is Over
    - Bottleneck Barbiturate
    - It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane
    - The Homecomer
    - Joy Surrender
    - You Who Stole My Solitude

And if I’ll be the winner, I’ll pretend the orchestral score on a special parchment paper. :D

  55. Comment by Emma K on April 10, 2008 5:32 pm

OK! Finally! I’ve been thinking long and hard. Here are my eight guesses:

    Absolutely No Decorum
    Calleth You, Cometh I
    No End
The Most Radical Thing To Do
    Let Me Down Gently
    You, Who Stole My Solitude
    Bottleneck Barbiturate
Tell Me This Night Is Over

However, I do believe we will hear one more song from the PFTW-album, but I really don’t know what song that could be. New Pollution maybe? And I really wanted to put Siamese Centerfold on this list as well. If you listen to the Merit Hemmingson version from Hultsfred 2001 you will hear what I’m talking about. But, I’m too much of a coward to put it on the list, and also I don’t believe Jonas owns the “Let Your Body Decide”-single and I don’t think he has the song as a mp3 (hey, my logic here is just wonderful, is it not?). And if you hear a second “poff” during the performance (apart from Christina’s that is) that is me bursting with anticipation as well.

God, I never though April of 2008 would be this exciting!

  64. Comment by Malin S on April 12, 2008 10:35 am

    Allright everybody! Here’s my guess. I bet it is a winner… ;-)

    - One of us i gonna die young
    - Tell me this night is over
    - Calleth you, cometh I
    - New pollution
    - This piece of poetry is ment to do harm
    - Clamour for glamour
    - No end
    - Echo chamber

    See you guys in Växjö!

  65. Comment by Nina on April 12, 2008 7:41 pm

I’ve done some rethinking… I really don’t want to change anything, I believe that the first guess often is the best, but I realised I just can’t have a list without Radical!!!
And then I’m pretty sure you’ll have Worrying Kind… just because that’s what the “ordinary” audience expects… =)

Now it’s a big problem which ones to let go… I don’t want to!!

How on earth did you guys manage to choose between the pieces?! Would like to have heard your discussions… And why only eight?

Ok, here is my new guess:

    * Absolutely No Decorum
    * Calleth You, Cometh I
    * Tell Me This Night Is Over
    * The Worrying Kind
    * No End
    * Bottleneck Barbiturate
    * The Most Radical Thing To Do
    * Disease

    -Clamour for glamour
    -Vendelay
    -Trust is shareware
    -The others
    -Let your body decide

  67. Comment by Majsan on April 13, 2008 8:57 pm

I just today heared about all the talk in here I thought it was ust leave your list and , go!

So interesting to hear about how this consept came about.
And I have been listening to Nordic Chill today and that gave me the Chills!

I am so looking forwaed to all of the Consert in Växjö and to see the new musichall.
I have been working just a few blocks from it but long before it was built.
I am a very new fan of The Ark and it was first the lyrics that I took in, but then I was listening to Linneus Rex on the web, and cryed!
I was very sad it was inpossible for me to get to Uppsala past fall, so this is just fantastic.

I might have to rething my list, but mostly i am looking forwared to hear more from jonas after the 26th about how he was thinking!!!

  68. Comment by Jonas on April 13, 2008 9:00 pm

Well, choosing songs was NOT an easy task. It’s hard to talk about it at this point, since the contest is running, but afterwards I will be glad to continue the discussion around choosing songs, working with the material etc etc. I can’t hardly wait until after the concert to hear what all of you ARK-experts out there thought about ARK entering the classical world!

Ok. It´s really hard to guess.. I mean, you never know, maybe “Girl your gonna get’em” would be fantastic on violins too.. :) I suppose there won´t be only “slow” songs but it´s hard to figure out which of the “fast” ones would fit an orchestra the best. And I also believe that you have thought a little about not only choosing unknown songs.. I guess there will be 50/50 wellknown/unknown songs (for people who aren´t as “obsessed” as we are.. :) ) eventhough you say we shouldn´t only think about the most wellknown ones. So, this is what I guess:

    Calleth You Cometh I
    Absolutly no decorum
    2000 light years of darkness
The most radical thing to do
    Interlude
It takes a fool to remain sane
    Bottleneck barbiturate
    You who stole my solitude
    Echo chamber

God.. I could write down every single song they´ve made.. :)

  124. Comment by Missmizz on April 17, 2008 9:09 pm

Oh, I´m sorry I wrote 9 ones.. (I said it was hard to pick only 8.. :) ). So; forget about… ?.. let´s say.. “2000 light years of darkness”.

  125. Comment by Jonas on April 17, 2008 10:20 pm

Thanks for your guess, Missmizz! I’ve written some notes on this page a few days ago about the choosing process, but OF COURSE, it was very hard… After the contest and after the concert next saturday I will be glad to continue to talk about everything in the Ark world vs. the classical world!
